Suitable for beginners and intermediate growers, AK-47 can be cultivated either indoors and outdoors. Although it is predominantly a Sativa, it does not reach the atmospheric heights of its cousins. It is only moderately tall, and can be pruned or trained to make it more compact. Furthermore, it matures and finishes growing quickly, which is more of an Indica trait. The major challenge lies in its susceptibility to humidity-related diseases such as bud rot. Another concern is the very strong aroma that could make it difficult to keep your crop a secret.
We recommend that you grow AK-47 indoors in an area with proper air circulation. This ensures an ample supply of carbon dioxide and oxygen – yes, plants need oxygen, too. Just as important, it prevents the buildup of humid spots in your grow room. It is best to keep the relative humidity (RH) lower than average to discourage fungal infections. After maintaining the RH at 65 to 70% for the first two weeks of the vegetative stage, drop it by 5% each week thereafter. When the plant starts flowering, adjust to 40 or 45%. In the last two weeks before harvest, you can decrease the RH even further to 30 or 35%.
Indoors, AK-47 grows to about 31 to 55 inches (80 to 140 cm) tall. But if the ceiling of your grow space is a bit low, you can try your hand at implementing the Screen of Green (SCROG) training method. While your plant is still vegetating, bend the shoots outwards, away from the main stem. This allows you to control its height. Moreover, by promoting sideways growth, you will expose the bud sites on the lower part of the plant to more light. The result is a heavier yield – up to 16 ounces per 3 square feet (450 grams per square meter).
If you are growing outside, you can let your plant reach its maximum height of 5.5 feet (170 cm). Just make sure that the conditions are sunny with plenty of fresh air. Should the humidity be too high, watch out for yellowing leaves. This could be a sign of Botrytis cinerea, the pathogen that causes bud rot. It spreads faster when it is rainy with strong wind, and can only be contained by removing infected buds. Regular pruning will help to nip the problem in the bud, literally. Otherwise, you might have to destroy the entire plant.

Within eight short weeks (or in mid-October if you are growing in the open air), you will start to notice dense lime-green nuggets and bright red-orange hairs scattered all over the plant.
