How to Smoke Weed with Just an Apple

As you might have guessed, an apple pipe (sometimes referred to as an “apple bong”) is a homemade marijuana pipe made using an apple. Being healthy, discreet, and dirt cheap, it has become an instant favorite among cannabis users who have no rolling papers or glass pipes on hand. It’s also ideal for those who simply want a disposable smoking device. Single-use items, after all, allow you to easily get rid of consumption evidence while avoiding the hassle of clean-ups.

Constructing an apple pipe may sound like rocket science, but it’s fairly easy to do and only requires widely available materials. There are two ways to go about it. The first method yields the classic apple pipe, while the other one produces something that resembles more of a bong. In any case, it all boils down to personal preference. Both approaches are straightforward, reliable, and efficient, so you should be blazing up your apple in a jiffy.

Option 1: Making a Classic Apple Pipe

This method calls only for a few basic supplies. Really, all you need is an apple and a stick-like device, which will be used to puncture the apple. The final product is what’s considered a “pure” apple pipe.

Step 1:

Before anything else, make sure to gather all the materials first. For this approach, you will only need an apple, pen, knife, and, of course, some ground-up cannabis buds.

Let’s get this out of the way. Make sure that the apple you’re using is fresh and crisp. The fresher, the better. If the apple has already begun to rot, then it’s likely too soft to be used. It will only collapse and fall to pieces when you try to pierce some holes.

As for the poking device, a ballpoint pen is recommended. Unscrew the cap and remove the internal ink reservoir, leaving only the empty container behind. Return the cap, ensuring that it’s tight and secure.

Step 2:

Grab your apple and remove the entire stem. You can simply twist it off with your fingers. As an alternative, you can use a knife to cut an incision around the stem, making it easier to remove.

Step 3:

Take the ballpoint pen. Position it at a slight angle over the hole where the stem used to be. Drill a hole through the top of the apple, making sure to maintain that small tilt. Keep at it until you’ve burrowed halfway through the apple.

If you’re having a hard time piercing the apple, consider pushing the pen with a twisting motion. Once done, don’t forget to take out and dispose of the apple piece.

Step 4:

Now, it’s time to bore a second hole, which will serve as the mouthpiece. Place the pointed tip of the pen at the bottom of the apple – around half an inch from the cavity at the base of the fruit. Carefully push the pen until you’ve created a hole that intersects with the first one.

Step 5:

Stab a third hole on the side of the apple. It should be about an inch or so from the top hole. Insert the pen and keep pushing until the third hole converges with the chamber system that you’ve set up.

The final hole will act as your pipe’s carb (short for “carburetor”). Remember, the carb needs to be covered with a finger while you’re igniting the buds and taking a drag. Then, it needs to be released before you finish pulling the smoke. Put simply, the hole has to be in a convenient spot so you can put a finger over it with ease.

Step 6:

After constructing the chamber system, the next step is to make the bowl. Essentially, it’s a small receptacle that’s meant to hold the packed raw flowers.

Use a pen or a knife to carve a hollow basin on the top of the apple where the stem used to be. Ensure that it’s spacious enough to fit the plant matter you will be smoking.

Step 7:

Your apple pipe is now ready for use. Pick up a small pinch of ground weed between your fingers and place it on the bowl. Gently pat down on the plant matter. Be extra careful not to overpack.

Step 8:

Hold the apple with your non-dominant hand, with a finger covering the carb or the small hole on the side of the apple. Place your mouth over the second hole near the bottom of the apple. Use your other hand to light up a corner of the bowl. Inhale slowly yet deeply. Enjoy.

Option 2: Making a Hollowed Apple Pipe

To construct the other version of the marijuana apple pipe, you will need a few extra supplies. But, it’s much more straightforward to make. Not to mention, the resulting pipe also looks a lot neater and tidier.

Step 1:

Before getting started, make sure your workplace is all set. Ready an apple, a knife, a spoon, and a pencil. And, don’t forget your ground-up marijuana flowers. Make sure that each cannabis chunk is more or less the same size for a smooth, even burning.

Step 2:

Grab your knife and position it about half an inch below the stem. Then, slice off the top section of the apple. Carefully pull out the stem.

Take care not to damage the removed part of the apple. This will be transformed into a bowl later on. So, make sure that it remains structurally sound. Set it aside for now.

Step 3:

Use the spoon to sculpt out a rounded chamber out of the larger portion of the apple. Scoop out the flesh up to about 0.8 cm (1/3 inch) down the base of the fruit. Make sure to leave enough apple bits on the sides. Without enough flesh, after all, your homemade pipe will not be able to maintain its shape and structural integrity.

Step 4:

Take your pencil and use it to puncture a hole about an inch below the rim of the hollowed apple. This will serve as the carb. When drilling a hole, do so slowly to avoid accidentally damaging the apple. Consider using a twisting motion as you carefully push the pencil through the apple.

Step 5:

Jab another hole a few inches to the side of the carb. This time, it will become the mouthpiece.

Step 6:

Place the bowl (the snipped off section) back on the apple. Fill the cavity with just the right amount of ground cannabis. Apply some gentle pressure on the plant material. Again, make sure not to pack too compactly.

Hold the apple with your non-dominant hand. Remember to cover the carb with your finger, and to place your mouth over the mouthpiece. Blaze up the bowl with your free hand and pull in the aromatic, flavorful smoke. Enjoy and indulge in some fun activities while you’re high.
